On Thursday, June 20, 2024 Quinte Adult Education celebrated adults who achieved their Grade 12 Ontario Secondary School Diploma. There were 96 graduates this school year from all over Ontario, with 34 in attendance to receive their diplomas.
Three graduates delivered graduation speeches, including Natalie Mastin, Debbie Mintz and Gabrielle Delong who all shared their stories following the theme, "Graduation is an opportunity to celebrate your accomplishment, no matter when it is achieved in life's journey." This was something Rhonda Gagne, former Quinte Adult Education secretary, always said to the graduates. After 34 years with the board, Gagne retired earlier this month.
Natalie Mastin shared how it was not easy to go back to school while raising young children, but she is so glad that she did. Debbie Mintz left school 47 years ago. She graduated just a few days before her 18 year old grandson, proving that “it doesn’t matter how long it takes to get an education, just go and get it.” Gabrielle Delong, another young mother said, “It is not an easy path, or a traditional one, but it is my journey and I’m really proud of it.” She found a lot of strength in the smiles of her daughters and wanted to show them that you can push yourself and succeed regardless of what obstacles you face.
Gabrielle Delong also received the Canadian Federation of University Women (CFUW) Belleville and District Adult Education scholarship worth $1600. This was presented by Janet Simpson from CFUW. Delong plans to study Pre-Health Sciences Pathways to Advanced Diplomas and Degrees in the fall. Once she has completed that program she will be doing the Paramedic program.
