This update provides a summary of the public meeting of Hastings and Prince Edward District School Board held Monday, April 25, 2016 at the Education Centre. It is an unofficial summary of the meeting; official minutes will be approved at the next meeting in June 2016.

15th Annual Great Place Awards
Kerry Donnell, Communications Officer to introduced the 15th Annual Great Place Awards. They are the highest recognition within Hastings and Prince Edward District School Board. Great Place Awards recognize outstanding contributions to support student achievement and well-being, and emphasize the commitment to the Growing with Character attributes of caring, cooperation, honesty, humour, integrity, respect, responsibility and trustworthiness. The committee reviewed 21 nominations and selected nine award recipients (11 people due to two team nominations).

Recommendations
Name of the new Trenton elementary school
Mark Fisher, Superintendent of Education, introduced Bill Launderville, Principal of Breadner Elementary School, Lee Prophet-Mahon, Vice-principal, Breadner Elementary School; and Joanne Nitschke, Principal, College Street Public School. Mr. Launderville described the process that has been followed to invite public input then select a name, mascot and colours for the new Trenton elementary school.
Board members approved the name Trent River Public School. They also approved the name Samuel Clements Centre for the centre core of new school, which will contain the learning commons (library area), stage and gymnasium. Mr. Clements was school board trustee in Trenton for 37 who will be acknowledged to recognize his contribution to education and the community throughout his lifetime.
In 2014, HPEDSB received Ministry of Education funding to build a new Kindergarten to Grade 8 school in Trenton to consolidate students from Breadner Elementary School, College Street Public School and (the former) Queen Elizabeth Public School. The new school is being built on the site of the former Queen Elizabeth Public School which was closed and demolished during the summer of 2015. Students from that school were accommodated primarily at Breadner Elementary School.
The new school is scheduled to open in January 2017. Its design is similar to other schools that have been built in HPEDSB in the past few years. It will be a rectangle-shaped 1 ½ storey building of 55,500 square feet for approximately 560 students.
Appointment of student trustees for the 2016-2017 school year
Board members appointed Saud Bin Haseeb, Moira Secondary School; and Delanie Ann Austin, Quinte Secondary School, as student trustees for the 2016-2017 school year. Lauren Barry, Centre Hastings Secondary School, was appointed as the alternate student trustee. All are effective August 1, 2016 to July 31, 2017.
2015-2016 Special Education Plan
Following a review by Special Education Services, the 2015-2016 Special Education Plan was presented to Board members for approval. Updates to programs and services were noted in the Summary of Amendments. Board members approved the updated plan.
Textbook/novel approval
The Ministry of Education Curriculum Centre Learning Resources website lists textbooks/novels approved for use in schools by the Minister of Education under the Education Act. HPEDSB Procedure 210: Textbook/Learning Material Selection, Purchase and Approval, sets out expectations for principals and teachers to follow when such materials are not found on the list provided by the Ministry, subject to the approval of the Board. Board members approved 23 French books for use in secondary schools.
Date and location of the Board meeting in November 2016
Past practise has been to hold one Board meeting at an off-site location in the fall of each year. Board members approved a recommendation to hold its meeting at Prince Edward Collegiate Institute, 41 Barker Street, Picton, on Monday, November 21, 2016.
