An Information Night for the Adventure Class at Queen Victoria School is scheduled for Monday, March 4, 2012 beginning at 6:00 p.m. Parents/guardians are encouraged to attend to learn about this innovative approach to delivering The Ontario Curriculum.
The Adventure Class involves older students helping younger students, parents sharing their skills, hands-on activities, community outings and an accent on real-life learning and discovery. Learning outside the classroom can include the following:
- Junior class trip to Ottawa, including a sleep over in a hostel
- Trip to Medieval Times in Toronto
- Visit to the National Air Force Museum of Canada
- Monthly visits to the Belleville Public Library and Art Gallery
- Hands-on local artist led workshops, for example, sessions with Marg MacIntyre and Gene Ouimette
- Participation in the "Stream of Dreams" project with Quinte Conservation Authority
- Loaf and Ladle homemade soup and bread lunches
- Visits to an organic farm, corn maze and the Stirling Agricultural Museum
- Performances by local musicians and story teller led workshops, for example Ian Tamblyn and Rick Fines
- Visits to local farms, markets and museums
- Moira River clean-up with Quinte Conservation Authority
- Local arts and theatre events at the Empire Theatre, Stirling Theatre and Centennial Secondary School
- Weekly physical educational instructional program outside of the classroom, for example 12 weeks of skating, 12 weeks of swimming, Frink Centre outings
- Christmas caroling by students, parents and family members
- Overnight family camping trip in June
- A number of monthly parent meetings, some with family pot-luck dinners
