Director of Education Rob McGall announces his retirement

Rob McGall, Director of Education with Hastings and Prince Edward District School Board, announced at the February 25, 2013 Board meeting his intention to retire on June 30, 2013. For over 30 years McGall has dedicated his professional life to education, with the last nine years as a member of the HPEDSB leadership team.

"It is with mixed emotions that we accept Rob's intention to retire at the end of this school year," remarked Board Chair Dwayne Inch. "Rob has been an exceptional leader in our district, he is a real people person who genuinely cares about our students and staff, and he is highly regarded by the Board. He has successfully guided improvement planning and has always been a strong advocate for public education."

McGall grew up in Belleville and attended King George Public School and Quinte Secondary School. His post-secondary education was at Queen's University, University of Toronto and Brock University. From 1983 to 2002 he worked for Hamilton-Wentworth District School Board in a variety of roles including teacher, department head, vice-principal and principal. He was active in the leadership development program in Hamilton, and was chair of the governance committee responsible for combining policies when Hamilton and Wentworth amalgamated.

McGall returned to this area in 2002 to become principal at Quinte Secondary School. In 2004 he was appointed to superintendent of curriculum and schools, followed by a 2007 appointment to superintendent of human resources and schools. In 2011 he was appointed to director of education. He has been the driving force behind community consultation for input on long range plans that support student learning.

"It has been a privilege to serve as your Director. I look forward to the next four months and continuing to make progress on our district priorities. As a former student of Hastings and Prince Edward, I am immensely proud of our school board and all that it stands for. It has been, and remains a privilege working with all of you in support of our students."

Board members will make decisions related to filling the vacancy left by McGall's retirement in the coming weeks.
