Students in the NERDS Program at North Hastings High School had an experience of a lifetime last week when they participated in bear den investigations.

The students assisted Ministry of Natural Resources personnel with the annual winter count and identification process. They travelled 20 kilometres into Algonquin Park by snowmobiles then walked to two sites on snowshoes. Once they arrived at the previously-marked dens, a wildlife biologist tranquilized the mother bear. The young were carefully taken out to be weighed and measured, then the mother was brought out for the same purpose.

Community partners were also involved and provided much-appreciated support.

Thank you to:

  • Bancroft Ontario Provincial Police
  • Bancroft Sport & Marine which supplied the snowmobiles for the students
