Butterflies, butterflies and more butterflies!

Butterflies, butterflies and more butterflies!

Students from JK to Grade 3 at 28 elementary schools (representing 68 classes) are learning about butterflies. In fact, they are watching the entire life cycle of the painted lady caterpillar-from the larvae stage through to emerging as a butterfly.

Schools received the caterpillar/butterfly kits in mid-May. Since then, students have been learning through the Understanding Life Systems strand of The Ontario Curriculum. They have discovered what happens during the nurturing and care of the caterpillars as they grow, change during the chrysalis formation and observe butterflies emerge.

A mass release of painted lady butterflies will take place on Friday, June 6, 2014. Some schools have already released their butterflies due to them being ready early.
