Congratulations to Amy Owen, Centennial Secondary School, who is one of 60 students across the province chosen to be on the Minister of Education's Student Advisory Council (MSAC).
Owen is going into Grade 11 in September 2014 and is thrilled to be involved.
"I live for the Arts. Drama, art, music. You name it; I love it. My principal was the one who told me about the council. So, I did some more research about it and thought it would be a great way to get the Arts into more schools around Ontario. I think when students participate in activities like music and drama, it is a great way for us to build important skills for the rest of our lives. In between my school work and social life, I love to read, write, act in plays and watch tons of movies. I am so glad to be able to work with MSAC this year and hopefully for the next few ones too." -Amy Owen, Centennial Secondary School.
What is the Minister's Student Advisory Council?
The Minister's Student Advisory Council is a group of approximately 60 students from all parts of the publicly funded education system and regions of the province.
Members share their ideas and advice with the Minister of Education on how to ensure Ontario's publicly funded schools remain the best in the world.
The council is about empowering youth to "be the change.' Council members think big, SpeakUp and take action to help other students across the province. They share perspectives and act as change agents by expressing their views directly to the Minister of Education.
What is involved?
The council meets with the Minister of Education twice during the year to share their ideas. During their term, council members create sub-committees on matters of interest and meet virtually to discuss them. They may be invited to participate in consultations regarding policies or programs that impact on students. Finally, council members are invited to attend their Regional Student Forum.
