Results of provincial EQAO assessments for HPEDSB students
Posted on 09/21/2016

This release presents student achievement results on the following provincial assessments administered by the Education Quality and Accountability Office (EQAO):

  • Primary and Junior (Grade 3 and 6) Reading, Writing & Mathematics
  • Grade 9 Mathematics (Applied and Academic courses)
  • Grade 10 Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test (OSSLT)

Were very pleased to see steady progress over time. We know where we will be focusing our efforts this year, particularly in math and literacy,"said Cathy Portt, Superintendent of Education, Curriculum Services.

Primary and Junior results

This year HPEDSB students made gains of 2 or 3 percentage points in reading and writing. Looking at a 10-year continuum of results reinforces that gains are being made in reading and writing.

Student achievement in math continued to decline at both the HPEDSB and provincial levels. Through the new provincial Renewed Mathematics Strategy, the Ministry of Education will be offering professional learning support and resources to help teachers successfully provide mathematics instruction during protected learning times.

Primary and Junior assessments were written by students in May 2016. They objectively measure student achievement in reading, writing and math in relation to a common provincial standard which is Level 3 or above.

Primary and Junior EQAO Results

Primary Junior
HPEDSB Province HPEDSB Province
Reading 59 72 72 81
Writing 61 74 65 80
Math 50 63 34 50

Results indicate the percentage of students at or above the provincial standard of Level 3.

Grade 9 Mathematics

For HPEDSB, results indicate an increasing trend over a 10-year period, with increases in both course types of 1 and 2 percentage points for the 2015-2016 school year.

The Grade 9 math assessment is administered at the end of each semester, in both Academic and Applied courses. Combined results are reported as the percentage of students achieving at the provincial standard.

Grade 9 Applied and Academic Mathematics Results

HPEDSB Province
Academic 80 83
Applied 51 45

Results indicate the percentage of students at or above the provincial standard of Level 3.

Grade 10 Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test

Results of students taking Academic English have remained strong over time, while overall combined results have declined over time. Results for students taking Applied or Locally Developed English indicate ongoing needs in literacy.

It is important to point out that HPEDSB deferral rates have decreased from 15% in 2011 to 3% in 2016, which more closely align with the province. This means more students are being given the opportunity to write the test in their Grade 10 year. It is an intentional approach by HPEDSB to prepare students for graduation.

The Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test (OSSLT) is administered once a year in the spring, in Academic, Applied and Locally Developed English courses. All Grade 10 students are eligible to write it. Successful completion of the OSSLT is a graduation requirement. The OSSLT is also the only assessment in which students who are eligible to write it can be deferred to a later time.
