Welcome from the Director of Education: Re-engage, recover and reimagine learning
Posted on 09/07/2021

Welcome students, staff and families to the 2021-2022 school year!

As Director of Education, I am excited to be embarking on a new school year that presents opportunities for learning, support and activity for our students. HPEDSB staff are focused on a return that will re-engage, recover and reimagine learning in our schools and classrooms.

I am especially pleased that the 2021-2022 school year will give us the opportunity to re-engage in our schools, to build community and to support our learners in person. There is no doubt that the past 18 months have challenged us in a variety of ways. While we did not all experience the pandemic in the same way, we all felt the impact in our lives. As we re-engage in learning, wellbeing is at the forefront for our students and staff as they return to our schools, either in-person or virtually. We look forward to the return of some of our essential supports, such as Food for Learning, in-person mental health supports, and school clubs and activities.

As we recover, we will ensure learning is hand-in-hand with wellbeing. Our students have been very active learners over the past year, whether in our physical and virtual classrooms, or in the home and community. We know there may still be learning gaps to address. Be assured, as we recover, staff will target key learning for our students to ensure they are equipped with the skills, knowledge and understanding necessary to be successful.

HPEDSB will continue to reimagine learning. The pandemic has given us an opportunity to look at teaching and learning differently. We have harnessed the power of technology in learning and have discovered that there is flexibility in our structures and approaches. It is an exciting time to think through how we can provide equity of hope, opportunity and outcome for our students in new ways.

I commit to you that we will balance re-engagement, recovery and reimagining with a close eye on safety for our staff and students. Numerous protocols and processes are in place to ensure our schools continue to be safe learning environments for all. Please refer to our Return to Learning plan for more information and further updates.

I look forward to a very successful 2021-2022 school year of learning together!

Sincerely,

Katherine MacIver
