Three major construction/renovations projects approved

Three school sites are set to receive makeovers in the next few years. All are in response to capital priority submissions submitted to the Ministry of Education last fall and result from accommodation reviews approved by the Board of Trustees in June 2017

1. Renovated Grade 9-12 school in Belleville

Thisproject received $16.8 million in Ministry of Education funding to consolidate Moira Secondary School and Quinte Secondary School. As a first step, Quinte Secondary School will close in June 2018. Approximately one-third of the Quinte students will transfer to Centennial Secondary School through boundary changes for September 2018. The remaining two-thirds will consolidate with the Moira students in September 2018. At that time the new school name Eastside Secondary School will be in place.

Project details and schedule

  • Construct an addition and make renovations at Eastside Secondary School to add 189 pupil places. The $16.8 million breaks down as $5.5 million for the addition, $2.3 million for renovations and $9 million from existing building renewal funds.
  • At time of writing this article, it is proposed that the architect/design work will take place from June 2018 to March 2019. Permits, Ministry of Education approval and the tender process will take place from April to August 2019. Construction and renovations will take place from September 2019 to August 2021, with the school open to students in September 2021.

2. New K-8 school in Belleville

This project received $10.5 million in Ministry of Education funding to consolidate Queen Elizabeth School and Queen Victoria School to create a new K-8 school.

Project details and schedule

  • Construct a new K-8 school on the existing Queen Elizabeth School site with 472 pupil places.
  • At time of writing this article, it is proposed that the architect/design work will take place from April to December 2018. Permits, Ministry of Education approval and the tender process will take place from January to June 2019. Construction of the new school will take place from July 2019 to December 2020, with the school open to students in January 2021.

3. Renovated K-12 school in Madoc

This project received $5.8 million in Ministry of Education funding to consolidate Madoc Public School and Centre Hastings Secondary School to create a K-12 school.

Project details and schedule

  • Construct an addition and make renovations at Centre Hastings Secondary School to add 52 pupil places. The $5.8 million breaks down as $1.1 million for the addition, $2 million for renovations and $2.7 million from existing building renewal funds.
  • At time of writing this article, it is proposed that the architect/design work will take place from April to December 2018. Permits, Ministry of Education approval and the tender process will take place from January to March 2019. Construction and renovations will take place from April 2019 to August 2020, with the school operating as K-12 for September 2020.

The Ministry of Education received 250 capital priority requests for a total of $3.3 billion in funding. Seventy-nine projects were supported at a value of $800 million.
