Reports to the Student Enrolment/School Capacity Committee propose that two secondary schools become Grade 7-12 schools for September 2019. Presently Bayside Secondary School and North Hastings High School are Grade 9-12 schools.
Bayside school group
Currently at the Bayside campus:
- All students in Grade 7 and 8 from Bayside Public School are located at Bayside Secondary School
- Both schools are near full capacity
On November 12, 2018 senior administration presented a proposal to the Student Enrolment/ School Capacity Committee to officially create a Grade 7-12 school at Bayside Secondary School, including French Immersion, effective September 2019. This means the administration team at Bayside Secondary School would assume responsibility for all students in Grades 7-12. No changes would be required to student transportation.
Through this proposed change, students in Grades 7 and 8 at Frankford Public School and Stirling Public School would remain at those schools, then transition to the Grade 7-12 Bayside Secondary School for Grade 9.
If approved in January 2019, this proposal would formalize Bayside Secondary School as being Grade 7-12 for September 2019.
North Hastings school group
Currently in the Bancroft area:
- All students from Bird's Creek Public School, Coe Hill School, Hermon Public School and Maynooth Public School transition to York River Public School for Grades 7 and 8
- York River Public School is near full capacity and requires additional space to accommodate student needs and programming
- North Hastings High School has surplus capacity of approximately 470 student spaces
On November 12, 2018 senior administration presented a proposal to the Student Enrolment/ School Capacity Committee to relocate the Grade 7 and 8 program, including Extended French for those grades, from York River Public School to North Hastings High School effective September 2019. Only minor adjustments to transportation are anticipated as all students in Grade 7 and 8 are already bused to Bancroft.
If approved in January 2019, this proposal would create a Grade 7-12 school at North Hastings High School for September 2019.
School boards are responsible for responding to program needs and changing demographics to ensure student achievement and well-being as well as financial sustainability/viability. HPEDSB is committed to providing optimum learning opportunities and environments in service of student achievement and well-being.
Under the current Ministry of Education Pupil Accommodation Review Guideline Exemptions (Pdf) and HPEDSB Policy 15: Student Enrolment School Capacity Pupil Accommodation Review (Pdf), when a school board is planning the relocation of grades in which the enrolment constitutes less than 50% of the school enrolment, a Pupil Accommodation Review is not required.
Families who have questions should contact their child's principal. A final recommendation will be presented to the Student Enrolment/School Capacity Committee on January 14, 2019. More information will be provided once a final decision is made in January 2019.
