Mary Schoones has been selected to join the Board of Trustees for Hastings and Prince Edward District School Board representing Belleville/Thurlow.
"I am pleased to welcome Mary to the Board of Trustees. She is eager to represent Belleville/Thurlow and is committed to fulfilling the governance role of a trustee. Mary is knowledgeable about our schools, having had prior experience with them and also with Quinte Mohawk School," said Lucille Kyle, Chair of the Board.
Schoones has over 35 of experience in the education sector, having been a teacher, facilitator, consultant for professional learning and leadership development, a seconded professor and a presenter/writer for a national education publisher. Through these roles she has become familiar with the issues and challenges faced by eastern Ontario school boards, as well as developed an understanding of the importance of equity, inclusion and student voice in governance. Schoones has visited all 40 elementary and secondary schools in recent years.
"In the role of a Board member, I believe it is imperative that I become familiar with the issues of HPEDSB and its communities," said Schoones, adding, "I'm looking forward to being at the Board table to further student achievement and well-being."
Schoones will be sworn in at the public Board meeting on September 24, 2018. Her appointment is short-term_until November 30, 2018 which is when the current 4-term ends_due to a vacancy. Former Trustee Mary Hall resigned from the Board in May 2018.

HPEDSB serves approximately 15,000 students at 40 schools (33 elementary, one K-12; two 7-12 and four secondary). Supporting student achievement is the goal of approximately 1,650 teaching and support staff who, in addition to the contributions of caring volunteers and community partners, share their passion for teaching and learning.
The district covers a wide geographic area of 7,221 square kilometres bordered by Maynooth to the north, Deseronto to the east, Prince Edward County to the south and Quinte West to the west.
