The month of May is recognized as Speech and Hearing Month in Canada. It is a time to recognize the importance of communication health.

The 2015-2020 Strategic Plan: Possibilities Today & Tomorrow includes priorities to provide programs and services to help each student achieve success, and to create welcoming, inclusive and accepting learning environments. We do this through our belief that all students can learn and become globally minded learners and leaders.

According to Speech-Language and Audiology Canada, the focus is to raise awareness about communication health and the critical role communication health professionals play in assessing and treating communication disorders. The focus this year is on the role speech-language pathologists have in supporting people with autism spectrum disorder. Resources can be found at: https://speechandhearing.ca/resources/.

Early intervention and treatment of communication challenges is vital. At HPEDSB, students with speech and language needs receive focused support through the work of our speech language pathologists, teachers, communications disorder assistants, educational assistants and early childhood educators, as well as community partners.
