Posted on 10/12/2018

Each month, school newsletters include a one-page insert called Home-School Connections. It describes ways in which families can enhance student learning at home in the areas of literacy; numeracy; healthy, caring schools and improving student learning.

This month's Home-School Connections (Pdf) features:

  • Number Talks: With Number Talks, students start to believe in themselves mathematically. They become more willing to persevere when solving complex problems.
    • What is a number talk?
      • Short conversations about mathematical problems
      • Student verbally share strategies after independent thinking
    • Why number talks?
      • To promote purposeful conversations about numbers and operations
      • To help students develop confidence in working flexibility with numbers
      • To explore mathematical concepts and relationships between numbers
  • Number Lines: Number Lines are models for thinking. Models are the vehicle to solve a problem and not just a picture of how the problem is solved.
