January 27 is recognized as Family Literacy Day throughout Canada. It is a great time to raise awareness of the importance of reading and engaging in other literacy-related activities as a family.

Taking the time to read with children can have a significant positive outcome on their ability to learn and improve their literacy skills. According to ABC Life Literacy Canada, "Taking time every day to read or do a learning activity with children is crucial to a child's development, improving a child's literacy skills dramatically, and can help a parent improve their skills as well."

Two priorities in the 2015-2020 Strategic Plan, Achieving Excellence & Equity and Learning & Leadership, contain goals about students achieving success, and cultivating student leadership and voice. In addition, the Board Improvement Plan for Student Achievement and Well-Being (BIPSAW) prioritizes literacy from Kindergarten to Grade 12 with early primary reading as a key area of focus.

To further support our literacy focus, each month school newsletters include Home-School Connections, a one-page flyer with handy ideas about enhancing student learning at home. The January 2017 issue contains snippets about encouraging children to read critically and ask questions, and more.

Join in celebrating Family Literacy Day on January 27 and every day!
