Saturday, January 28 is recognized as Data Privacy Day, a day to highlight the effect of technology on privacy and to consider how to value and protect personal information.
Every day, thousands of employees and students throughout Hastings and Prince Edward District School Board access online resources. In recent years, HPEDSB has expanded its use of cloud services with the introduction of Office365 and Microsoft OneDrive, with student/teacher collaboration using Google Apps for Education, extended use of blended learning tools, such as D2L (Desire 2 Learn).
As we continue to tap into the wealth of information available online, we must be mindful of the potential risks of privacy breaches and cyber bullying. As a system of character, it is our responsibility to protect ourselves and others, and to continue to support safe, respectful and inclusive learning and working environments to support student achievement and well-being for students and employees.
Many resources are available to help better understand and navigate through privacy issues in the online world. Internally, the following procedures guide our work:

Take steps to protect your personal privacy online by following these simple guidelines:
- Set strong passwords, and don't share them with anyone.
- Limit the amount of personal information you post online and use privacy settings to avoid sharing information widely.
- Be cautious about what you send, receive and share online.
In addition, maintain an open dialogue with family, friends, colleagues, students and parents about Internet safety.
