Across Canada, National Aboriginal Day is recognized annually on June 21. This date was chosen because of the cultural significance of the summer solstice-the first day of summer and longest day of the year-and because many Aboriginal communities mark this day as a time to celebrate their heritage. Setting aside a day to acknowledge National Aboriginal Day is part of the wider recognition of the founding place of Aboriginal peoples within the fabric of Canada.
According to Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development Canada, on June 13, 1996, the Governor General of Canada proclaimed June 21 to be National Aboriginal Day, offering Aboriginal peoples an opportunity to share their rich, diverse cultures with family members, neighbours, friends and visitors.
